Hadhrat Hood (Alyah Salaam) -
A summary of his life
Hadhrat Hood (Alayhis Salaam) was from the tribe of Aad and the Quraan has made mention of him on seven different places. He hailed from the noble clan of Khulood. He had a reddish white complexion, with a commanding personality and a lengthy beard. Apart from the Quraan no other Book, historical or Divine has mentioned the people of Aad and therefore most Western scholars have classified them as mythology and legend. The tribe of Aad however is from amongst the ancient Arab tribes and they inhabited the Earth approximately two thousand years before Hadhrat Isa (Alayhis Salaam). They were settled in Arabia, in the north of the province of Hadhramaut with Oman in the East and Rub' ul Khali (the "Empty Quarter") in the north.
The Aad were idol worshippers and being extremely powerful and strong people they totally forgot their One Creator. In view of this gross deviation from the straight path, Allah raised Hadhrat Hood (Alayhis Salaam) as a Prophet amongst them. He invited them towards the One Allah, exhorting them to worship Him alone and shun the evil and oppression they were perpetrating, at the same time making it clear to them that he expected no reward or retribution from them. He pleaded with his people to show gratitude to the One Creator who had favoured them with power, strength and wealth, as the hand sculptured idols which they worshipped could neither harm nor benefit them in any way. He exhorted them to repent and lead an upright life warning them about severe punishment as it had befallen the people of Nooh (Alayhis Salaam). They not only ignored but rudely and arrogantly challenged Hood (Alayhis Salaam) by asking. "Who is more powerful than us?" (41:15) They found it increasingly infuriating that they were being advised against evil and thus resorted to mocking Hadhrat Hood (Alayhis Salaam) and branding him a liar and a madman. They were especially adamant in opposing him as far as the worship of the One Allah was concerned, saying that under no circumstances would they forsake the practices of their forefathers as this in itself was disrespect towards their forefathers. They firmly asserted that the idols which they worshipped as their forefathers had done would surely intercede for them, and fearlessly invited Hood (Alayhis Salaam) to bring forth the punishment he had warned them about. When their rebellion and transgression went beyond all bounds, Hadhrat Hood (Alayhis Salaam) made Dua unto Allah, "0 Allah assist me because they have falsified me". (23:39) Allah replied, "Soon they shall regret it", (23:40) and He then sent an initial punishment upon them by causing a severe drought. This drought caused them much hardship and suffering upon which Hadhrat Hood (Alayhis Salaam) once again took the opportunity to reform them but without any success. They showed no less animosity and derision towards him than they had all along shown. Allah then unleashed the final punishment upon them in the form of a strong and powerful wind which blew continuously for seven nights and eight days, totally wiping them out as well as their city.
