HADHRAT NOOH ALAYHIS SALAAM
A summary of his life
Hadhrat Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) is the first prophet to have received a mission on the face of the Earth. He is mentioned in forty three places in the Quraan.
Until before his mission the world generally was engrossed in the worship of one Allah but with the passing of time Shaytaan cunningly led them astray, and idol worship became the salient feature of their way of life. It was on account of this that Allah raised Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) as a prophet amongst them.
He conducted Da'wat and Tableegh amongst them for a period of nine hundred and fifty years, and approximately eighty people adhered to his call. The remaining rejected his prophethood because they regarded him inferior to themselves and not worthy of being obeyed. They refused to accept that a human being from among them had been appointed a messenger of Allah, and plainly branded him a liar. In fact the followers of Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) were from among the poorer class, and the affluent, owing to their gross arrogance, felt it below their dignity to follow such a prophet whose followers were poor people. They expressed their revulsion and contempt for these people in no uncertain terms. Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) continued with his Divine Mission relentlessly, using every opportunity and means to convey the message of Allah to his rebellious people but to no avail. They not only rejected him but made every effort to harm him and spent all their resources in hampering his cause. In fact they blatantly challenged Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) to bring forth the punishment of Allah about which he had warned them. In reply Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) said, that Allah Alone has the power to send down His punishment when He so wills.
Allah revealed to him that apart from those who have already embraced Imaan no others would ever heed his call. It was then that Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) made Dua unto Allah, "0 Allah! Spare not a single home of the Disbelievers. If you spare them they shall lead your servants astray and their generations will also be sinful and disbelieving". (71:26)
Allah accepted this Dua and ordered him to construct an ark. As he set about his task of constructing this ark, the Kuffaar once again found an opportunity to mock and ridicule him. He continued with his task looking out for a sign which would announce the arrival of the punishment. When the sign became apparent, i.e. a fountain burst forth from an oven, he boarded the ark with his family, followers and a pair of every type of animal as per Allah's command. When all were safely aboard, Allah ordered the skies to let loose their waters upon the earth and He ordered the earth to gush forth its waters. In this way the enemies of Allah were destroyed by the raging flood, with nowhere to escape and only those on board the ark were saved. Thereafter Allah ordered the waters to recede and the ark of Nooh (Alayhis Salaam) came to a standstill on Joodi, which is from among the mountains of Araaraat, also known as Jazira.
